Three axes of evaluation
Scientific merit, regulatory pathway, and commercial insertion. Each is necessary; none is sufficient. Companies that excel on one axis and are silent on the others are the most common pattern of expensive misjudgment in the category.
The regulatory question
Understand the specific pathway, the specific precedents, and the specific timeline before valuing the opportunity. In healthcare, regulatory sequencing determines capital sequencing; there is no way to separate them.
The commercial question
Approval is not adoption. Ask, from the beginning: who prescribes, who reimburses, who purchases, who administers, and who advocates. The businesses that endure are the ones that have thought about all five before the first pivotal trial concludes.
